Interstate Road Travel with Pets: A Practical Planning Guide

Driving interstate with a pet takes more planning than packing an extra bag. A long day in a vehicle changes an animal's feeding, exercise and toilet routine, while the route may cross state borders with different rules. Whether you are driving yourself or asking for a private transfer, work backwards from what your pet needs rather than the fastest map estimate.

CrownCharter considers pets on pet transport enquiries by prior arrangement, subject to the route, vehicle and animal's needs. This guide is general planning advice, not veterinary or legal advice. Confirm applicable rules with the relevant authorities and ask your vet about your own animal before setting off.

Check the route and entry rules first

List the origin, destination and any overnight stops. Check current entry or biosecurity requirements for every jurisdiction on the itinerary, particularly if travelling to or from Tasmania or across routes with special conditions. State and territory requirements can change; do not rely on a checklist from a previous trip. Carry your pet's identification details and any health or vaccination records required for your route.

Arrange accommodation that accepts your particular pet, not just a listing marked “pet friendly”. Ask about size limits, secure outdoor areas and whether animals may be left alone. If you need to split the drive, reserve the stop before you commit to a departure date.

Choose a safe, comfortable vehicle setup

Tell the transport provider the species, number of animals, approximate sizes, carrier dimensions and number of human passengers. A vehicle with enough seats may still lack room for a suitably positioned carrier and everyone’s luggage. Agree on where the pet will ride before the quote is finalised; a private chauffeur vehicle is not the same as a dedicated animal freight service.

Use a suitable secured carrier or restraint for the animal and vehicle, and keep pets out of the driver's footwell. Bring familiar bedding, a lead or harness, water and a spill-safe bowl. Never leave an animal alone in a parked vehicle: temperatures can rise rapidly even on a mild day. If a pet is anxious, motion-sick, elderly or has a medical condition, speak to your vet rather than assuming a long journey will be tolerable.

Build a realistic day on the road

A journey that looks manageable without stops can become tiring with an animal on board. Allow time for breaks in appropriate places, traffic, refuelling and any change in weather. Offer water regularly and plan toilet breaks according to your pet's usual routine. Keep dogs leashed at stops unless you are in an enclosed, permitted area; ensure cats are contained before opening vehicle doors.

Feed and medicate only as advised for your pet. Keep routine supplies accessible rather than buried beneath cases. On hotter days, schedule with temperature and shade in mind, and ask whether a multi-day itinerary is more sensible than trying to complete an unusually long drive in one stretch.

What to include in a transport enquiry

For a long-distance transfer, share the full addresses, proposed date, passenger and pet counts, carrier sizes, luggage volume and planned stops. Say whether the owner will travel with the pet, and explain any handling or accessibility needs. The team can then assess whether a suitable vehicle and itinerary are available and provide a tailored quote; acceptance and arrangements must be confirmed before travel.

Before departure, agree on pickup and handover details, a contact number for the day and what should happen if timing changes. At the destination, have water, a familiar resting space and an enclosed area ready. A little preparation at both ends is often the difference between a manageable transfer and a stressful arrival.
